Letters given to the person who died
6 min read
A letter in the coffin or memory box lets guests write a final greeting meant only for your loved one.
Place paper, pens, and a closed box or envelope near the exit. Invite guests to leave a letter or drawing.
Discuss with the funeral director when letters are kept and who may read them later.
Who they are for
Some families read letters together later. Others leave them unopened with the person who died. Both are fine if agreed in advance.
Children may draw or add a stone. It does not need to be adult text.
A box at home
If you prefer not to place letters in the coffin, use a memory box kept at home. The intention is the same.
