Letting children colour the coffin together
5 min read
Drawing and colouring together can give children a gentle, tangible role in the farewell, in a way that fits their age.
A ritual that belongs to them
Some families want children to do something, not only watch. With crayons or paint on a white cloth over the coffin, or on separate cards kept afterwards, they create something of their own.
Discuss materials and timing with the funeral director in advance. A quiet moment after the service often works better than during the ceremony.
Guidance and choice
Explain simply what the coffin is and that drawing may be a greeting, not a duty. Let children choose whether to join and how long to stay.
A parent or trusted adult can sit beside them so it feels safe, not overwhelming.
Keeping it for later
Photograph the cloth or cards with care, or store them in a folder. Later, children can look back on what they contributed.
