Lighting candles from one shared flame
4 min read
A shared flame can symbolise light and warmth passed from person to person.
Light one candle at the start, perhaps by a close relative or by you. Then invite guests to light their own candle from that flame.
This ritual suits a quiet service or the closing moments when everyone is seated.
Practical and safe
Use stable holders and keep tissues nearby. Outdoors or in a spacious hall is easier than a small chapel with drafts.
Check with the venue what is allowed. The funeral director can briefly introduce the ritual.
Giving it meaning
You may say one sentence, for example that the person's light continues in those around them. Silence is fine too.
